The Hatchback Special is nothing more than a removable ends Vbar with a shorter bar. It is a 5 foot bar with 1 foot removable ends to make for a 7 foot rack. This is our most popular rack. 7 feet is plenty of length for a boat up to 21 feet. If you have a liftgate, this shorter bar will usually allow you to center the main bar on your crossbars (front to back), and allow you to open the gate without hitting the bar. This is our most popular size. It is ideal for OC1s too if you plan to pair it with the Bolt On Ama rack, as you can mount the ama supports onto the removable ends with the canoe Vs. This way, you pull simple pins and remove both the canoe Vs and ama supports at the same time, leaving just the bar on the car. And, with the shorter bar it means that the ama supports will only be 5.5 feet apart (short enough for almost all amas). See Important Fit Notes Below.

Important Fit Notes:

Standard hardware fits most crossbars, including Aerobars. However, we can make hardware for anything. Please leave a order note (at the bottom of the checkout page) if your crossbars are more than 3.4 inches wide, or 1 inch tall?

Is this going on a hatchback or short SUV? The bar should be centered on your crossbars. Your hatch however, may contact the bar when open. You can move the bar forward of center up to a foot, but no more. Consider a shorter bar (7 feet is plenty long for a 21 foot boat). Ideally, please consider the Hatch Back Special to minimize this.

Is your boat wider than 18 inches? OCs, rowing shells and full competition kayaks fit best in standard Vs. Some intermediate surfskis fit better with extra wide Vs, and usually just in the back. Boats like V8, V7. V6, 520, Eze, SR, S18, Bluefin etc. Not sure? list your boat in the order note at the bottom of this page. Cliff will guide you.
